One Life: Movie Review

Hello,

Last night, my friend and I participated in AMC's "Screen Unseen." Every so often, AMC theaters will do a showing for $5 of a movie that has not been released yet. The catch is that you do not know what the film will be until it starts. Based off of the clues provided, I thought we were going to be seeing Kung Fu Panda 4 and my friend (correctly) predicted One Life

Directed by James Hawes and based off of the book by Barbara Winton, One Life is a true story about Sir Nicholas Winton who orchestrated the rescue of over 650 children from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II. We get to see a younger Winton, played by Johnny Flynn, as he goes forms and executes his plan to rescue as many children as he can out of Czechoslovakia. We then get to see Winton as an older man, played by Anthony Hopkins, as he lives his life wondering if he actually did make an impact.

I really enjoyed this movie. Anthony Hopkins' performance as the older Nicholas Winton was wonderful and the way the film was shot really kept you as the viewer engaged. But that is not the reason why I loved this movie. This is the story of one man, during one of the darkest times in Earth's recent history, taking it upon himself to make a difference. He did it without any hope of reward or acknowledgement and when asked how he felt about his accomplishment, he could only say that he regretted not being able to rescue more. The message in this movie is very powerful. It shows you that anyone can make a difference in the world if they truly set their mind to it. Nicholas Winton did not have unlimited resources or anything like that, he was just a regular broker in England who saw an opportunity to help and take action.

The story of Sir Nicholas Winton deserves to be told and he deserves to be celebrated. I highly recommend checking this movie out.

Thanks for reading!!
