The Book of Clarence: A movie review

This past Wednesday, my friends and I traveled to Braintree Massachusetts to participate in AMC theater's Screen Unseen promotion. We paid $5 and got to see a film that has not yet been released. The catch was that we had no idea what the film was going to be. Our only clues were that it was rated PG-13 and it was over 2 hours in length. Being the magnificent detectives that we are, we did some research and predicted that the film would be Jeymes Samuel's The Book of Clarence starring the amazingly talented LaKeith Stanfield. We were really hoping that we were right, and fortunately, our prediction was correct!

Written and Directed by Jeymes Samuel, The Book of Clarence takes place in biblical times when Jesus Christ was the talk of the town. The titular character, Clarence (played by LaKeith Stanfield), finds himself down on his luck and in need of a better life. Clarence notices how people worship and praise Jesus, not to mention the money that he makes, and decides that he wants to become the next Messiah.

I really enjoyed this film. To start, it contained an all-star cast including (and not limited to); LaKeith Stanfield, James McAvoy, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Each of these actors delivered excellent performances, specifically LaKeith Stanfield who's is one of his best in my opinion. The story kept me engaged the entire time and there was just the right amount of comedy and drama that made this a very fun and entertaining film to watch. The best way that I can think of to describe this film is as a fresh take on the stations of the cross with some camp and drama sprinkled in.

Thanks for reading and I hope you see this film when it comes out!
