Kinds of Kindness

Kinds of Kindness directed by Yorgos Lanthimos is now playing in theaters. The film features a stellar core cast lead by Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone and serves as the 3rd feature film collaboration with Lanthimos and Stone. Stone received Oscar nominations for the first two (The Favourite & Poor Things) and is likely to receive another for this one.

This film has been getting a lot of hype and is riding the coattails of the success of Poor Things which was a masterpiece. Sadly, this film was not a masterpiece, and I was very disappointed after watching it. I have only seen The Favourite and Poor Things from Lanthimos' catalog and, similar to those two films, Kinds of Kindness features amazing cinematography, beautiful set and art design, and Oscar worthy performances by the entire cast. Unfortunately, unlike the previous two films, this movie lacks the great storytelling that we got to enjoy in the first two. The uniqueness of this film cannot go unnoticed, and I can appreciate what Lanthimos was trying to do with the 3 short stories within 1 larger story. Despite that, the movie was too complicated and confusing to be enjoyed.

A movie such as this will and should be celebrated for its artistic style and incredible acting performances but when I think back on if I liked this movie or not, the answer is no. This movie was boring, and I couldn't wait for it to be over even before the first short story ended. I recommend watching this movie for its artistic beauty but if you are in the mood to be entertained, I recommend skipping this one.

Thanks for reading!
